War is Hell, Let's Play Air Guitar

As a way to relieve stress, soldiers in Iraq are apparently playing air guitar:

Several of the videos found on the Internet reveal bizarre methods of relieving the stress that comes with life in the combat zone — like playing air guitar with a shovel, moon walking and ambushing Porta Potties.

"We have destructed the Porta Potties!" shout some soldiers as they knock over a toilet.

Of course, a shovel is really a primitive form of air guitar, but when it comes to inspiring world peace, it's better than holding a gun.

Virtual Air Guitar is NOW!

"I can feel it coming in the air tonight
and I've been waiting for this moment for all my life"
--Phil Collins, In the Air Tonight

Yes, the Finns not only rule the world air guitar championship, but they've also figured out how to make the world's first virtual air guitar. Brilliant guys over there doing the most important research I can possibly imagine. As Zac "The Magnet" Monro once said. "Air guitar can save your life." Now, here's help.

Here's the video.

TOP 25 AIR GUITAR SONGS?

I need your help, oh Vanity Air readers! I am compiling a list for my book about the top 25 songs for competitive air guitar. Now, keep in mind, this is for the stage, not the bedroom. Let me know what you think. You can post without logging in...

I realize 25 songs is a lot of songs. Please tell me your top 5 at the very least!

Thanks,
Bjorn!

Make Donald Trump Play Air Guitar

I can't explain it, but go the Subserviant Donald website and tell "The Donald" to play air guitar, and, um, he will.

This is what technology was meant for.

Guy Who Liked Nothing More Than Playing Air Guitar, Mysteriously Killed

Exerpt from the Great Falls Tribune:

"When Suddeth was taking his meds, he was a pretty normal guy, his mom said.

For a while, he supervised a crew that built metal sheds. He was married and had a daughter. He also had another daughter from another relationship.

Suddeth, an outdoorsman who liked to fish and bowhunt, was at his happiest when he was strumming his "air guitar" to a Lynard Skynard tune, his mom said." (Italics added).

This is a tragic story my friends. Please be careful out there...

Rod Explains Why He Doesn't Do Coke Anymore

From the NY POST:

NOSE FOR QUALITY
ROD Stewart says he doesn't do cocaine anymore because it's just not as pure as it used to be. The rooster-coiffed crooner, 60, longs for the days when dealers didn't mix the drug to maximize profits. "I don't know why anyone would want to take coke now," Stewart tells contactmusic.com. "It was different in my day, because it was all so much purer. Now these dealers mix it with salt, washing powders, anything they can get their hands on. Kids just don't know what they're taking."
-->
Don't be such a pussy Rod. Give me a call, I can hook you up with some good stuff.

Har Mar Superstar Air Guitar

I just discovered that Ross Angeles, the official West Coast Master of Jamming has a video of Har Mar Superstar rocking the air guitar at LA Aireoke last year. Why I just discovered this now? I was stoned, dude. Like, wicked stoned.

Pass me some of those salt and vinegar potato chips. I can't stop eatin that shit.

Buffalo Daughter Video

I finally found a link to that Buffalo Daughter video. It's got me, Krye Tuff and C-Diddy as well as a bunch of other dudes and a skinny chick who I taught how to play air guitar all airing it up good.

The funny thing is, the most screen time Bjorn gets is playing air keyboard. Also, note the song only has 1 guitar chord in it.

Check it out.

In the Words of the Immortal Psycho Dave

"Bjorn might have yet to win a National Competition, but he is THE reason air guitar is a success in America. Hands down. Maybe he is my friendliest rival, but I would not be able to continue to compete, nor would I have been able to get to the level that I am at as an air guitarist without his commitment and love for the craft. I owe a lot of my success to Bjorn. Let me put it this way, he is the Babe Ruth of American Air Guitar. Hands down." -- Psycho Dave

Aireoke: Williamsburg-Wednesday ROCKTOBER 26

Now that the sun is out again, I've finally hit the 'next' button to forward off of The Zepp's "Rain Song."

What have you done for air guitar lately, NYC?

Due to popular demand, AIREOKE is back next Wednesday the 26th starting at an EARLIER START TIME.

(LA, I am working on something for November. Just chill out for now, or hop on JetBlue--pray for straight wheels--and get your ass out here).

Bjorn Turoque is back and ready to rock. His air guitar is polished and waxed, and he feels hungry and hell bent to rock. Join him, Air Lingus, and DJ's Ruxpin and Air-Do-Well, as well as Block Mag for Roctober Aireoke.

So far no word from Eddie, Keanu, Mike Judge

Trying to get quotes from Eddie Van Halen, Keanu Reeves and Mike Judge about air guitar for my book. Shockingly they have not replied to my request for an interview. If someone could put in a good word for me, that would be great.

Back from Vacation

Okay, it's been almost a month since my last post. I am lame, but I've been on vacation.

What's happening in the world of air?

Aireoke:Williamsburg continues -- next one is Roctober 26 @ Trash Bar. May be an LA Aireoke in the near future too...

Apparently two dudes at Harvard (which I am told is a school in Boston) are doing an Air Guitar Musical. If you are in Boston, check it out. (Oct 13-15). Here's more info.

This is what they told me:

The musical is called "Finding Their Guitar" and tells the story of a
boy destined to be a rock star. Unfortunately, he is born with a rare
degenerative disease that causes weakness in his arms, so he cannot
hold a guitar. When he thinks all is lost, a guru appears and teaches
him about the art of air guitar. The guitarist agrees to follow the
path to airness and the musical ends with his championship competition
performance. This musical is a heartwarming story of overcoming
adversity and is a lesson about life as much as it is about air guitar.

The show runs from October 13-15
at the Loeb Experimental Theater at Harvard. If you or any of your
airudite friends are interested in coming to see the show, tickets are
free and open to the public.

Dang.

And some sample lyrics (credited to authors Ben Green/Charlie Miller)

YOU'VE GOT THE NOTES INSIDES YOU,
YOU WANT TO HEAR THEM RING.
WELL, I KNOW A LOT OF ROCK STARS
WHO'VE NEVER TOUCHED A STRING.
THEY DON'T HAVE TO KNOW THEIR SEVENTH CHORDS,
THEY DON'T NEED TO LEARN THEIR PART.
‘CAUSE THEIR GUITAR IS AN AIR GUITAR,
AND THEIR MUSIC IS THEIR HEART…

Truer words were never said, much less sung...

Americans Shut Out at World Finals

Perhaps America's foreign policy has finally caught up to her. Though three contenders from the US participated in this year's Air Guitar World Championship, none came in the top 5. I, myself, came in 8th.

The winner was The Destroyer, from Holland, who pretended to be a robot. The future of air guitar is clearly more about artifice than rock and roll.

Nonetheless, we continue to rock in the free world...what's left of it!

German Champ Crowned: Another Female Heading to Oulu

The glass ceiling of air guitar seems to have been shattered this year.

In Germany, Katarina Tomaschek, aka Leni Krawitzkowsky, won the national championship and will head to Oulu.

Let's hear it for the ladies.

An excellent article . The German press nails that shit. Here's an excerpt: "The prejudice that air guitar performance is nothing more than a pathetic and somewhat cheesy desire for attention couldn't be further from the truth, say the air guitarists themselves."

She'd kick ass, obviously.

Is Someone More Airudite Than Bjorn Turoque?

This chick in England is trying to get a PhD in Air Guitar.

...and my parents were freaked out when I told them I was majoring in Film.

So, will she go on to teach? Set up An Institute for Advanced Air Studies? I suggest she contact Wesleyan University here in the US...

On Bill & Ted's DVD Extra with Bjorn and Rockness, JoBlo.com had this to say:

"Air Guitar Tutorial with Champs The Rockness Monster and Bjorn Turoque (13 minutes):

Air guitar Champs? I guess there really is something for everyone but this was kinda weird. Rockness Monster actually looks like he’s having some fun with this but the Turoque character is just bizarre although hilarious. The two guys discuss their own techniques and share their top ten tips to playing the air guitar."

Maybe he actually is getting too old for this...?

Stage Diving Can Kill You

THE lead singer of British rock band Bad Beat Revue died on stage after an acrobatic leap went tragically wrong...

A lesson to us all.

Bjorn & Rockness Get Good Review on Bill & Ted DVD

From the Washington Post

Most Hilarious Bonus Point: The air guitar tutorial on the "Bill & Ted" set is filled with almost as many catchphrases as both movies combined. Turoque (pronounced "to rock") calls himself "the second-best air guitarist in the world" and notes that becoming a true air guitarist means "sacrificing your friends, your family and your dignity, really." Later, he offers this piece of air guitaring advice: "Be there with the rock, and the rock will come to you." As Abraham Lincoln says in "Adventure": Party on, dude.

From the Arizona Republic Sports Pages...

We've heard it before

As much as USA Swimming seems always to be exasperated by the antics and words of Gary Hall Jr., it doesn't hesitate to borrow from him.

The swimming body sent out a release Monday to announce that the United States had won the 400-meter freestyle relay gold medal at the World Championships in Montreal, noting that it avenged a loss to the "air guitar-strumming" Australians at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

It was Hall, remember, who brashly promised the Americans would smash the Australians "like guitars" back in 2000 because of the air-guitar act.

You might also recall that when USA Swimming was asked why Olympic coaches left Hall off the relay team in Athens four years later, it answered, "Who?"

Oh, yeah, that relay team. Their bronze medal was the worst finish in U.S. Olympic history.

Aireoke: Williamsburg-Wednesday July 20-How it went?

For those who rocked, we salute you!
(An Aireoke digest from our co-hosts at Block Magazine)

The second episode of AIREOKE:Williamsburg was undeniably one of the most significant nights in the history of rock n’ roll, as air guitarists shrieked in one unified voice of rock, “We’re not gonna take it!”, signifying AIREOKE’s indisputable emergence as the next best thing to cheap, cold beer and phone sex.

The evening began like an orgasm. If looks could kill, looks would most certainly be New York’s most loveable air guitar army, High Maintenance. From their very first note, strummed hard and true, this night seemed destined for Airness!

Bjorn Turoque, our faithful host and the nation’s second best air guitarist displayed his unwavering devotion to air guitar and humanity by publicly praising Rockness Monster, the man who recently bested Bjorn to represent the United States in the World Air Guitar Championships this August. The funny thing is…Rockness Monster was there!!! Yes people, Number One and Number Two, the President and Vice President, Batman and Robin, Crouching Tiger and the Hidden Dragon, were under the same roof at the same time. Showdown? Showmanship!

Picture this, Bjorn and Rockness (both an easy 6’7”) shoulder to shoulder, back to back, face to face shredding so much air it was difficult to breathe. The moon was full, girls were crying and many guys figured out for the first time who they truly were.

After a much needed break the air settled, but continued. Face melting, gut busting performances by the likes of Airistotle, ViAIRgra, Roberta Bruce, Air Spray, Air to the Throne and others from the smutty air guitar herd, collectively fueled what will go down as one of the greatest AIREOKE JAMS of all time.

Led by Air Force One and his co-pilot, the crowd pleaded in pain for one song. Yes my darling friends, Free Bird! And when the song began it was as if Trash Bar ascended to some higher more sacred ground, where “this bird will never change.” Sweat glistened on naked bodies, beer (and cans) were sacrificed, shirts were set on fire and American flags swayed coolly like the masts aboard the Santa Maria. It was in a word, heaven.

For all those present, I thank you. You have live heads and live hearts and were a part of something larger than all of us. For all those not present, shame on you. But fear not, AIREOKE STRIKES BACK August 24.

The next AIREOKE is Wednesday, August 24
The Trash Bar
256 Grand Street (Driggs & Roebling)
Williamsburg, Brooklyn (Bedford L Stop)
OPEN BAR 9 to 10 p.m.

As more and more air guitarists flock to rock AIREOKE, it’s only going to get bigger and better. Thanks again to all of our air friends and now family.

Until August 24…
Keep rocking - for air guitar, for peace!

See you all soon.

Rockness Monster becomes Nation's #1 -- Bjorn settles for #2

At the US Air Guitar Championships last week, Bjorn Turoque gave the performances of his life. He received the evening's first perfect score (four 6.0's) and was told he had finally "defined airness." But it was not enough. He lost to the hometown favorite, the Rockness Monster. A tragedy for Bjorn, and perhaps for the nation -- will Rockness have what it takes to go all the way?

The stakes are high this year...
